From Colorado Senate News.
By signing into law nine bills that will raise taxes by $300 million, Senate Republicans say Democrat Gov. Bill Ritter effectively ensured the destruction of thousands of Colorado jobs.
During debate over the tax hikes, hundreds of Colorado businesses showed up at the Capitol to oppose the tax bills, saying they were job-killers. A tax hike on energy, for example, will cost Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel Mill an estimated $2 million annually and put 1,000 jobs at risk. Pepsi officials told lawmakers that a new soda tax will jeopardize as many as 800 jobs. A new tax hike on candy threatens 150 workers at Grand Junction confectioner Enstrom’s, and the more than $3.3 million the company spends each year with more than 300 Colorado vendors.
"It is appalling that Democrats can't find a way to balance the budget that doesn't involve raising taxes by hundreds of millions of dollars," said Sen. Greg Brohpy, R-Wray.
Last year, Gov. Bill Ritter and majority Democrats levied $1 billion of new taxes and fees on Colorado families, including a $90 million property tax increase on Colorado seniors; a $30 million tax hike on small businesses; a $225 million-a-year car tax that will raise registration fees by up to $70 per vehicle; a new half-billion dollar tax on the state's hospitals, and a $40 million tax increase on capital.
Republicans offered an alternative proposal that would have spared Colorado families and businesses from the latest slew of tax hikes by implementing across the board cuts for all state departments and agencies. Democrats elected not to take up the GOP proposal until after the tax hikes had been signed into law, delaying consideration of the bill until March 3. It has been sent to the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affair Committee, which is used by leadership to kill legislation. from - Rachel Boxer Senate Minority Press Secretary

Is the Tea Party Movement Racist? - RossPutin
#tcot #redco #teaparty #
The People's Press Collective is lucky to have such a talented Blogger as Rossputin. His reputation is growing and this is another great post tackling a very sticky subject.
To me this seems a very dangerous tactic of racial division seeking to brand the entire movement as based in racism and may indeed lead to racially charged protests and more, around and against Tea Party gatherings/rallies this summer.
Since minorities, and specifically African Americans, have been co-opted and exploited by the Democrats and the left, they are extremely unlikely participants in an essentially anti big government, liberty based movement except where economic diversity and success has given way to individualism and enlightened self interest within various ethnic communities. In other words, the minority of minorities will tend to be small in number at such gatherings as simple logic would dictate. READ THE ENTIRE REPORT AT PPC

Scott Brown Politics as Usual - votes for more deficit spending
Rather than holding to what he ran on (deficit spending is bad) Brown has voted with the Dems on another massive spending bill...of money we of course don't have, neither do our children, it has not even been created yet....perhaps Brown thinks we can just print some more and that will be OK? Scott apparently has no idea the kind of trouble our country is in and the kinds of hard decisions that will need to be made....very soon.
Brown is not as the Democrats are saying, the answer to partisan bickering in Washington, he is a progressive Republican...color me unsurprised and unimpressed.
He will be useful for conservatives on occasion I am sure, and I am actually glad he has shown his true colors early so we can stop this silly talk about his great political future.
Hard choices ahead people. While he is better than Democrat....he is still a progressive....he has that cancer and we now should treat him as such.
Those who voted for Scott are feeling quite betrayed...but I remind them we really knew nothing about him .

Democrats In Colorado Vote No On Transparency
#redco #tcot #unions #publicschools #teaparty
From Colorado Senate News.
Senate Democrats killed a bill that would have required school districts to put their check books online, bringing accountability and transparency to the public education sector.
The measure, Senate Bill 91, would have required public schools to maintain a readily accessible online database that would have outlined district spending. The bill also called for monthly updates and notification of budget changes.
SB 91 sponsor Sen. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch, said the measure would be most useful in helping balance the state’s budget. “Through transparency we can better identify waste and potential cost savings,” Harvey said. “As we prepare to cut K-12 in order to fill the state’s budget hole, I think a database like this would be extremely useful."
SB 91 was killed on a party line vote in the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee today.
"What are Democrats afraid of? What are they trying to hide?" Harvey asked. "Can't we agree that transparency is a good thing for taxpayer money, especially scarce resources meant to be educating our children?"
Harvey introduced an identical bill last session. It was approved by the upper chamber, but ultimately killed by union Democrats on the House Education Committee.

A school superintendent in Rhode Island is trying to fix an abysmally bad school system.
Her plan calls for teachers at a local high school to work 25 minutes longer per day, each lunch with students once in a while, and help with tutoring. The teachers' union has refused to accept these apparently onerous demands. Read the rest

Raising Taxes in the DNA (good or bad economy makes no diff) of Colorado Senate Democrats
#tcot #redco #colorado #teaparty
Funny when progressives express faux outrage at a conservative who wants to CHANGE the tax system to be more fair ...when they themselves never met a tax increase they don't like if it is their idea. What a bunch of hypocrites. They love taxes if they hurt business owners (whom they like to refer to as the rich), job creators, risk takers and...well you know the people who provide our jobs.
For instance;
Democrats move tax increases from temporary status to permanent
Dems cop to tax hike, and then re-start dancing on head of a pin
Yesterday the Minority Leader had to give them a lesson in Economics 101...although I doubt it will help...this is what they do. However Republicans would like to get the Democrats more involved in the consequences of their decision to raise taxes by helping business owers choose which workers will lose their jobs;...

COLORADO SENATE REPUBLICANS
GOP to Morse: Who would you fire?
The GOP is asking Sen. John Morse, a Democrat from Colorado Springs, to get specific about which employees should be laid off is a package of tax increases he supported this week become law.
Morse and 17 of his fellow Democrats passed a slew of “dirty dozen” tax increases yesterday that Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel in Pueblo estimates will cost the company $2 million annually and force the company to lay off workers. Pepsi Bottling Co. also expressed concern, telling the Associated Press last week that the tax hikes would jeapordize some 800 jobs.
“We are asking Sen. Morse, Gov. Ritter and all of the other Democrats that voted for the tax increases to tell us which workers they think should be fired so companies can afford to pay higher taxes,” said Sen. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch.
Republicans -- joined by a handful of Democrats in a bipartisan coalition opposing the the new taxes -- proposed trimming state spending across the board last week as an alternative to the tax hikes. At the time, Morse, Ritter and Budget Committee Chairwoman Moe Keller ridiculed the GOP's measured, across the board approach, demanding instead that Republicans identify specific bureaucrats for layoffs and salary reductions..
"The tax hikes Sen. Morse and others supported this week are going to kill jobs," Harvey said, "So let's hear some specifics -- which Evraz and Pepsi employees does Senator Morse think ought to be fired or take pay cuts?"
The tax increases amount to $335 million and will raise taxes on everything from Big Mac containers and electricity bills to candy and even Internet purchases.

Obama on Health Bill: ‘I Wish We Had Gotten It Done Faster’
#obamacare #healthcare #ppc #teaparty #socialism
From the WSJ Healthcare Blog - my comments in red
It’s still unclear what the Dems are going to do about the health-care overhaul, now that they’ve lost their filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. So much of the health coverage this morning (including the lead stories in the WSJ and New York Times) keys on an interview President Obama gave to ABC News on Wednesday.
Here’s a passage from the interview that gets lots of play in the morning news: My responses to the president's pleas to keep this train going are in Red.
I would advise that we try to move quickly to coalesce around those elements of the package that people agree on. I don't think we agree on what we agree on Mr President. We know that we need insurance reform, that the health insurance companies are taking advantage of people. umm, no we don't know that, most of us are happy with our insurance and think it's fair. If you want to tweek it to keep costs under control that's fine but an overhaul is not necessary. We know that we have to have some form of cost containment because if we don’t, then our budgets are going to blow up and we know that small businesses are going to need help so that they can provide health insurance to their families. Whose budget? My budget or the federal government? Is Medicare unsustainable, that's your problem to fix your broken socialist programs...don't ask me to pony up for your bad ideas. ? Fix that..streamline, take out waste, bring in some NON-government managers to clean it up, fire people, make it like a real company rather than a bloated bureaucracy. The problem is competition stifling laws (like across state lines) and cost of litigation Mr. President, if those aren't addressed, you aren't getting anything passed sir. Those are … some of the core elements of … this bill.
As the papers note, this list notably excludes a mandate that everyone buy health insurance READ THE ARTICLE HERE

Freeze on HIV spending sparks concern in Africa
Must read article, the tone-deafness isn't just here in the US, apparently this administration is clueless on all fronts. This is one thing that of course the left probably doesn't even realize...Bush spent more on HIV treatment than any president in history. Whether you agree this is part of what the government should be doing or not, most people do not realize that he did this...that is because this is part of the news the MSN chooses NOT to print.

Welcome to Chicago Style Politics Mr. Stupak
#tcot #prolife #teaparty #stupak #chicagomachine
No room for Pro-Lifers in the Democratic party and Bart Stupak just found that out. Among the trillions of dollars in this record budget, Obama deleted a 1 million dollar scholarship for Olympic athletes named after the late son of Bart Stupak.
According to RedState, Congress funds a $1 million scholarship fund at Northern Michigan University for aspiring Olympic athletes. Robert Costa notes the scholarship was renamed in 1998 for Bart Stupak’s son who had committed suicide. However, it seems the new Obama budget of $3.8 TRILLION, that adds $1.6 TRILLION to the deficit kills this scholarship.
The Olympics begin in 10 days. Hat tip http://www.fireandreamitchell.com/

Colorado Representives Vote For Tax Increases During Recession
#ppc #tcot #redco #teaparty
Count them among the clueless. The ones that have no idea how the economy works or how to actually generate more revenue for the government... and yes Colorado, they are yours. For these Dem's raising taxes is a religious rite, and their Faith in how it works defies all logic and evidence.
Hat tip Ben at the PPC
Among those who voted Yes on every one of the tax increases:
Sara Gagliardi (27)
Dianne Primavera (33)
Debbie Benefield (29)
Max Tyler (23)
Jeanne Labuda (1)
Judy Solano (31)
In the case of the first two, you have to wonder if Democratic leadership has already signed off these two seats as Republican pick-ups. As for the last four (and possibly others), they’ve handed a giant issue to their opponents or potential opponents.
