Obama's plan faces criticism from Republicans and others who say it's too expensive. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released a report Friday saying Obama's agenda would cause huge budget deficits, forcing the country to borrow $9.3 trillion in the next decade.
Those who gathered at Kelly Ingram Park in downtown Birmingham were urged to enlist others who share Obama's vision and to stay away from trying to convert naysayers.
"We're looking for supporters," said DeHaven of Hoover, one of the event's organizers. "We're not looking for a fight. That will come later, when we have an army." (Emphasis Mine)
The volunteers are part of Organizing for America, the same grassroots, national network credited in large part with Obama's quick rise from obscurity to president. Birmingham and 11 other sites statewide were part of a national push this weekend by Organizing for America to trumpet Obama's spending proposal. READ THE REST

The senator responsible for the legislative changes that allowed executives of a bailed-out company to get millions of dollars in bonuses has received lucrative donations from the firm and his wife has strong financial ties to it.
No wonder Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd created a loophole in last month’s $787 billion stimulus bill to allow insurance giant American International Group (AIG) to keep its controversial bonuses. Dodd, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, slipped a last-minute exemption that permitted the financially ruined AIG to issue $165 million in bonuses after the government rescued it with $170 billion in taxpayer assistance.
The veteran Democrat lawmaker initially lied about his role in the scandal, but subsequently admitted it because the loophole had his paw prints all over it. This week a political news publication is shedding more light on the matter by revealing Dodd’s deep financial ties to AIG.

***UPDATE, I found some protesting Obama, so not hypocritical). (see below)
“People are really conflicted now,” “peace” activist Patricia Kneisler said, explaining how many of the demonstrators felt they should not be protesting the war while Obama established his administration.
At this point Obama is not pulling out of Iraq any faster than the Bush administration had announced plans for doing and he continues to insist that he wants to engage more heavily in Afghanistan. Further, his Afghanistan policy has been one of upping the ante since the presidential campaign. There has been no hint that Obama is going to institute the precipitous retreat that these self-proclaimed peace activists wanted. So, on the face of it, Obama is not bringing “peace” on their terms. Yet, they still won’t protest him? This makes it obvious that “peace” is not the agenda of the so-called peace movement. Politics is. They wanted a Democrat and did their level best to destroy George W. Bush’s policies to get that Democrat in office. Their guy won. Obama went to the White House and so these “peace vigils” end.
It doesn’t matter one little bit that the troops haven’t come home and that the “peace” they claimed to want hasn’t been achieved.
***UPDATE International Answer, a so-called antiwar group, held a gathering two Saturdays ago, which had escaped our notice until we read an account, posted Friday, by Will DiNovi of The Atlantic. We found DiNovi's report quite heartening:
Hey Obama, yes we can. Troops out of Afghanistan, chanted the crowd. Barack, Barack, Barack, Afghanistan's the same as Iraq. And this: NoBomba! At last weekend's anti-war protest in Washington--the first of the Obama era--the refrains were clever, if perhaps somewhat predictable. But the frustration of the activists was hardly canned.
"It doesn't look like Obama is changing anything," said Kyle Quigley, an Iraq War veteran who had traveled from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to attend the rally. The president's decision to delay withdrawal from Iraq by three months is a sign, Quigley argued, of Obama's "backsliding" on his campaign promise to end the war. Quigley's frustration with the president was shared by many of the anti-war activists at the rally, which was sponsored by the group Act Now To Stop War and End Racism.
Cautious and pragmatic, Obama has always been more centrist than his supporters on the left. His 2008 pledge to raise troop levels in Afghanistan and his vow to be as "careful getting out" of Iraq "as we were careless going in" disappointed those looking for a swift rejection of George W. Bush's foreign policy. Now two months into his presidency, Obama's cautious centrism has provoked an inevitable rift with some of the most devoted interest groups that swept him to power. Neurosurgeons are not so easy to find in Canada where subspecialization is not rewarded, and 50-60% of boarded neurosurgeons leave the country to practice somewhere else within 2 years of their certification.
The last good data I could find listed only 174 neurosurgeons in the entire country. In the U.S. we have 3,500. A study on the need of neurosurgeons listed the density of neurosurgeons in the U.S. to be about 1/55,000 people which means that an analogous number of neurosurgeons needed in Canada would be about 604.
It is true that neurosurgeons eschew emergency room coverage in the United States, but it is for completely different reasons than in Canada. Here, our ED’s don’t want to pay what it takes to hire a neurosurgeon for coverage; in Canada, no one wants to even be a neurosurgeon.
So, in a sense, the Canadian model for health care failed Natasha Richardson because of an artificially created shortage of subspecialists, which is a purposeful design meant to keep costs low in a taxpayer-funded-system. The U.S. would very much like to go in this direction and the plan is to broaden non subspecialized care options while reducing higher-tech procedures, diagnostics and physicians.
But as we go towards a single-payer system, we can all expect that when we need it most, the system will not be there for us, as it was not there for Natasha Richardson.
Comparable ski areas in the U.S. – say Vail and Park City – both list neurosurgeons in their cities. Vail, Colorado has a population of 4,589 and is home to 1 practicing neurosurgeon. Park City, Utah population 7,371 also lists 1 practising neurosurgeon.
The Author later says ; I forgot to mention in rural (US) areas they may not have neurosurgeons on hand.. but they do have physicians who are comfortable performing common life saving operations for head trauma.

I applaud Governor Ritter for this, but to me it seems to fall short as though it was entirely created by civilians without much input by service brass. Perhaps because I am in the Navy reserves I think about this more than others but there are 10's of thousands of Air Force, Navy and Marine reservists who also served in Iraq that could use this help. Yes the Army does the yoeman's work on the ground but they are not the only ones being separated from their families for a year or more at a time, once, twice or more in the GWOT. This is incomplete.
As I do every month, last drill weekend I learned of 3 more of my friends headed overseas for a year or more. Reservists don't get deployed with friends, they go by themselves. They don't go with their unit they get involuntarily (or voluntarily) deployed alone. Any help we can give them on return to help them is welcomed.

The White House on Monday named David Stevens as assistant secretary at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The position requires Senate confirmation and would put Stevens in charge of the government's housing mortgage-insurance program. John Murtha may have served his country during war time but since then he's turned into a power hungry, dishonest, bribe taking, US Marine accuser bordering on treasonous politician.
Murtha has routinely and deliberately undermined the United States military, slandered servicemen serving in combat, and caused irreparable damage to our international reputation.
While serving as a Representative from Pennsylvania, Murtha called Marines from 3d Battalion, 1st Marines "cold blooded killers" who "murdered innocent civilians." Before an investigation into the Haditha incident was even conducted, Murtha went on numerous television news programs and announced that the Marines "went into houses and killed women and children." He said,
"There's no question in my mind about what happened here. There was no gunfire, they killed four people in a taxi...24 people were killed." When asked specifically if he claimed that innocent civilians were intentionally executed by Marines, he said, "That's exactly what happened." Not content to slander those Marines directly involved, he went on to claim that if these Marines were not punished, "other Marines would say well I'll do the same thing." Murtha then continued to use this incident to lobby for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, citing it as evidence that our military was incapable of winning the war.
Since that time all of the Marines in the incident have been cleared of wrong doing and Murtha has not apologized or admitted his mistake. SIGN THE PETITION Murtha is a cold blooded power hungry politician who hurts the morale of the troops for personal gain.

#tcot #gop #hhrs In stunning fashion Senate Banking committee Chairman Christopher Dodd told CNN’s Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer Wednesday that he was responsible for adding the bonus loophole into the stimulus package that permitted AIG and other companies that received bailout funds to pay bonuses.
This is something I did not think we would see for at least another three years. Someone check hell and see if the freezing over has begun sooner than expected.
Source UPDATE; HolyCoast.com reports that Dodd's stunning honesty also extends toward the current Commander-in-Chief.
Chris Dodd must be pretty concerned about this chances for re-election next year. He's already been blamed, and rightfully so, for blocking reforms to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that led to the banking crisis, and he's also been fingered as they guy who put language in the TARP bailout protecting AIG's much-maligned bonuses.
March 19 (Bloomberg) -- Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd said the Obama administration asked him to insert a provision in last month’s $787 billion economic- stimulus legislation that had the effect of authorizing American International Group Inc.’s bonuses.
Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat, said yesterday he agreed to modify restrictions on executive pay at companies receiving taxpayer assistance to exempt bonuses already agreed upon in contracts. He said he did so without realizing the change would benefit AIG, whose recent $165 million payment to employees has sparked a public furor. READ Dodd Throws Obama Under the Bus

#tcot #gop Most people probably don't think about Daniel Pearl any more, just like they don't think about 9.11 very often, and they probably never watched the horrific video of his beheading by Islamisists...but I think about him a lot, and I also subjected myself to watching the video at least once so I would not forget what radical Islam is really all about.;
'Forcing the world to submit to its demented love-less religion, and anyone who fights against it is to be brutally murdered in such a fashion as to scare others from fighting it.'
Daniel was not killed necessarily because he was American, or Jewish, or a member of the press, he was killed mainly because he was exposing the factions within Islam working inside the United States, he was a soldier in the war on terror and he probably even saw himself that way to one degree or another.
Daniel Pearl was on his way to interview Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani about his ties to shoe bomber Richard Reid, Gilani's ties to funding for Al Qaida and connections to the Pakistani Intelligence Service (ISI). Daniel wanted this interview so badly that it cost him his life.
So who is Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani? You don't know because the media is not reporting on him. They are afraid.
According to the Northeast Intelligence Network, Pakistani Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani came to the United States in 1980 and established a group of followers living and working in the United States and Canada, each having pledged their support to cleanse and spread Islam through violence. The group is named Jamaat ul Fuqra.
Over the last 28 years, Jamaat ul Fuqra and its funding arm Muslims of the Americas headquartered in Hancock, New York have been involved in a number of murders, fire bombings, extortion, and other criminal incidents, including the group's support to the infamous beltway snipers who terrorized our nation for three weeks in late 2002. #tcot #gop #hhrs #redco -Serious, but funny Friday video. I know people who have worked at GITMO and been stationed there, and were involved in interrogations over their entire deployment. The cries of "torture" from the left are propaganda...PERIOD. No one I know has ever even seen anything like it nor even heard of it. If someone did step over the line and got too rough with a murdering terrorist, it was definitely an isolated incident and not a matter of policy.
I know I am just one person testifying here, there could be others that are more in the know, but this is a pattern. A pattern of our enemies to discredit our position in the world and a pattern by the Democrat leadership to gain political power.
Our soldiers, sailors and marines are not trained to do anything like torture, and it is not sanctioned, you will lose your job and would be put up on charges if you did. We are the good guys. Do we ever make our enemies uncomfortable, go without sleep for a while, make them lean against the wall rather than use a chair, answer questions when they don't want to?...yes when necessary. Does a CIA agent ever make someone really uncomfortable if we know they have information that can save lives? Probably, but it is not the norm, it is not a policy...period, and as I said, no one i know ever even heard of anything like this.
Because of 9-11, President Bush made allowances for rougher treatment if necessary, things like "water boarding" to be allowed. I've never heard of it being done unless it is to one of our soldiers going through training. I know from the news that one of the masterminds behind 9.11 was waterboarded, and as a result, thousands more lives may have been saved. Because that took place, don't fall prey to the lies that this is something American servicemen do regularly, it is not.
I have heard this statement from many interrogators; Being respectful and nice to terrorists yields the best results...they aren't used to that. I believe waterboarding is in fact torture, and I don't condone it and think it should not be done, but I also look at it through the lens of an American servicemen who has friends who are Navy SEALS....and they've been waterboarded. So I don't get too upset when one terrorist every 10 years gets treated like a SEAL. My view changed on 9.11, as did many Americans, but mine didn't change back like apparently so many others did.
Since about 1952 the enemies of the US know that to defeat us, they infiltrate our country, our media with their lies and make it sound like it is coming from here (propaganda). With a willing media and for the sake of power, a complicit political party they continue to do just that successfully. Proof of that is that most people think (including our current President) that torture takes place at GITMO. It is a lie fashioned by the enemies of the west from outside and inside our borders, in order to make the US to appear as bad as anyone else..including the terrorists, which as Steven points out is utterly ridiculous.
Steven mentions this in his video which is important; US Service Members who undergo Survival, Evasion, And Resistance (SEAR) training get waterboarded. It is not fun for our guys or for the terrorist murderers but as I said, this is NOT the norm, it is the extreme exception and is never taken lightly. We are the good guys. This video is funny because Steven is funny, but this is a serious subject.

Embryonic stem cell research is immoral and ineffective. It is immoral because it destroys human life at its earliest stage of development by harvesting the stem cells for body parts. That statement of course is debatable depending on how you define human life, but what is NOT debatable is that embryonic stem cell research has been completely ineffective and has yet to be used a single time in any therapeutic application. And it isn't because they haven't been trying. Remember President Bush gave the go ahead for research using the already existing cells in hundreds of labs across the country.
Researchers must get their funding from taxpayers for embryonic stem cell research because they can't convince private sources to invest. Private investors know there are no proven uses for embryonic stem cells. It's all hype, hope and theory.
But adult stem cell research, on the other hand, is ethically benign and is already being used to treat over 70 diseases and conditions. If taxpayer dollars are going to be spent on stem cell research, that's where it ought to go.
By reversing funding restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, Pres. Obama is making every American taxpayer complicit in immoral, life destroying research. This is a terrible example of political ideology trumping sound science.

Barack Obama 'too tired' to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown
Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president was facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.
But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.READ THE REST

This week, the United States Senate will vote on a spending package to fund the federal government for the remainder of this fiscal year. The Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009 is a sprawling, $410 billion compilation of nine spending measures that lacks the slightest hint of austerity from the federal government or the recipients of its largess.
The Senate should reject this bill. If we do not, President Barack Obama should veto it. The omnibus increases discretionary spending by 8% over last fiscal year's levels, dwarfing the rate of inflation across a broad swath of issues including agriculture, financial services, foreign relations, energy and water programs, and legislative branch operations.
