Quote of the Week - Dirk Benedict

Yes, Dirk (A-Team and Battlestar Galactica) Benedict. He gave up his Hollywood life to raise his boys in Montana and now is writing about it. The whole interview is worth a read over at NRO.

“Even up in Montana I’ve spent the last 20 years defending the right of my boys to throw a frickin’ snowball, to climb a tree, to jump off a little cliff, to go out in the canoe off my dock without a life jacket,” he says. “All the little boys that refused to give into that were put on Ritalin. The future warriors of America are all on Ritalin in the second grade.

Ritter to raise taxes on every driver Monday

#tcot #redco Democrats raising Vehicle taxes in CO next week.
DENVER (AP) - Gov. Bill Ritter says he'll sign a bill on Monday to raise vehicle registration fees in Colorado. The increases will be used to pay for bridge and road repairs. The Senate gave final approval to the bill today with a 20-14 vote.

It phases in the increases over three years, ultimately costing owners of passenger cars and SUVs an extra $41 a year.

Democrats have been rushing to pass it because they say it will create thousands of construction jobs.

This is the Democrat idea of creating jobs...raising taxes on people already working. READ THE REST

Byron York - Democrats would kill for Bush's deficit

Must read of the day #tcot #stimulus

Pelosi and Reid called Bush's budgets "dangerous" and "unpatriotic," but with Obama, they've changed their tune

Back in 2006, when Democrats were hoping to win control of the House and Senate, party leaders worked themselves into a righteous outrage over the issue of out-of-control federal spending. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called the Republican budget “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic” because it increased the amount of U.S. debt held by foreign countries. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of going on “an unprecedented and dangerous borrowing spree” and declared GOP leadership “the most fiscally irresponsible in the history of our country … no other president or Congress even comes close.”

.....At some point last week, the sheer velocity of Obama’s spending proposals began to overwhelm even experienced Washington hands. In the span of four days, we saw the signing of the $787 billion stimulus bill, the rollout of a $275 billion housing proposal, discussion of Congress’s remaining appropriations bills (about $400 billion) and word of a vaguely-defined financial stabilization plan that could ultimately cost $2 trillion. When representatives of GM and Chrysler said they might need $21 billion more to survive, it seemed like small beer.

Life in Socialist America

In a socialist country, the haves and have nots are divided by power and money. The haves usually work for the government in some way, or are influential in the public sector. In a free market environment, anyone can become a millionaire if they keep working at good ideas, build skills, work hard, have some good luck and are smart.

There will always be the rich and the poor, but the rich should not be government employees. There is a reason why they call it public "service". It should not be a career of choice for those wanting to be set for life.

I don't begrudge anyone from making a good living, even in a government job, and especially in a dangerous job, but the government should not be the best place to work, not the place to become a multi-millionaire, and in America it has been for some time now. Welcome to socialism.

Don't let anyone tell you the American dream has faded. the truth is the U.S. is still minting lots of millionaires. Glenn Goss is one of them.

Goss retired four years ago, at 42, from a $90,000 job as a police commander in Delray Beach, Fla. He immediately began drawing a $65,000 annual pension that is guaranteed for life, is indexed to keep up with inflation and comes with full health benefits.

Goss promptly took a new job as police chief in nearby Highland Beach. One big lure: the benefits.

Given that the average man his age will live to 78, Goss is already worth nearly $2 million, based on the present value of his vested retirement benefits.

The problem with this picture is not Glenn Goss. By all accounts he was a good cop. The problem is that there are millions of Glenn Gosses from Highland Beach to Honolulu. So many that they pose a vast, debilitating burden to state and local finances.

They're creating a nasty social problem as well. America, in case you hadn't noticed, is dividing into two nations. The 22.5-million-strong public sector (that includes retirees) is growing ever larger, and enjoying ever greater wages and benefits often guaranteed by state constitutions. Best Post of the Day so far on Why the Stimulus Package only Stimulates Government

#redco #stimulus #tcot
From Steven Nielson....The theory is simple - the government injects "stimulus money" into the economy - a series of infrastructure jobs and pet projects - such as an $8 Billion high-speed rail line between LA and Las Vegas (home to Sen. Reid - pet project anyone?), or a bridge to nowhere... Jobs are created for these "shovel ready" jobs... but the money must be taken out of other sectors of the economy - through higher taxation of other individuals - or in our case, ANOTHER DAMNED LOAN FROM CHINA.

The cause of the economic crisis is NOT because government didn't do enough... it is because government over-regulated, made impossible demands on banks and other sectors, and then waiting for the implosion - so they could swoop in and clean up the mess with "the only solution left - Nationalization"...

Friends, family, and readers alike - I echo the words of Jack Cafferty: "Why am I not surprised? Congress lying to the American people has become part of their job description. They can't be trusted on anything anymore." READ THE REST at the New Conservative

Colo. High School Suspends Marine Drill Team Member Over Fake Guns

FROM REDSTATE #redco #tcot I am wondering if the Color Guard will be next...you know they use fake guns too in their routines with the Marching Band.

So why are the administrators in the Aurora, Colorado public school system harassing and punishing one of those very young people that we should be celebrating? With actions such as this, liberals are not only destroying our schools but also our traditions and our very social fabric.

High school senior Marie Morrow, 17, of Cherokee Trail High School is serving an illicitly sentenced 10-day suspension and her expulsion from school is on the line within the month. Miss Morrow is a team leader of the Young Marines youth leadership group and participates in the group’s drill team.

Miss Morrow has never been in any trouble before and plans on attending the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy after graduation — if the idiots at her high school let her graduate at all, that is. Young Miss Morrow has even received the necessary recommendation from her local congressman as the first requirement to be admitted into the academy.

The principal for Cherokee Trail High School is Brooke Gregory. S/he could very well be not yet fully aware of this situation: give him/her a call at 720-886-1904 and politely inquire.

The Superintendent for the Cherry Creek School System is Marie Chesley, and she would no doubt like this problem to go away. You can reach her at 303-773-1184 - just to make sure, though.

The Congressman for CO-07 is Ed Perlmutter (D). Call him up at 202-225-2645 and ask him if he supports the expulsion of students trying to do rifle drills. If you live in the District, his number there is 303.274.7944.

Mark Udall (D) is the senior Senator for Colorado. Call him at 202-224-5941 (877-768-3255 if you’re from Colorado) and ask him the same question, assuming that you can get through from all the people screaming about how we’re about to pass a trillion dollar debt bill. On the other hand, they’d probably be ecstatic to have something less minefield-like to work on, at this point.

Michael F. Bennet (D) is the junior Senator for Colorado. Call him at 202-224-5852; if/when you get through, be sure to ask whether he would have sanctioned this when he was running the Denver school system.

Change indeed, Democrats by the numbers

#tcot As bad as our previous Republican president allowed things to get, he was at least honorable, and did his best (as poor as that may have been sometimes) to warn of impending doom in the economy. It doesn't compare to the outright thievery happening now.
Here are just some of the numbers in scandals involving Democrats:

$34,000: the amount of federal taxes that Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner (D) failed to pay during his employment at the International Monetary Fund despite receiving extra compensation and explanatory brochures that described his tax liabilities.

$75,000: the amount of money that the head of the powerful tax-writing committee, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), was forced to report on his taxes after the discovery that he had not reported income from a Costa Rican rental property. His excuses for the failure started with blaming his wife, then his accountant and finally the fact that he didn't speak Spanish.

$93,000: the amount of petty cash each Congressional representative voted to give themselves in January 2009 during the height of an economic meltdown.

$133,900: the amount Fannie Mae "invested" in Chris Dodd (D-CT), head of the powerful Senate Banking Committee, presumably to repel oversight of the GSE prior to its meltdown. Said meltdown helped touch off the current economic crisis. In only a few years time, Fannie also "invested" over $105,000 in then-Senator Barack Obama.

$140,000: the amount of back taxes and interest that Cabinet nominee Tom Daschle (D) was forced to cough up after the vetting process revealed significant, unexplained tax liabilities.

$356,000: the approximate amount of income and deductions that Daschle (D) was forced to report on his amended 2005 and 2007 tax returns after being caught cheating on his taxes. This includes $255,256 for the use of a car service, $83,333 in unreported income, and $14,963 in charitable contributions.

$800,000: the amount of "sweetheart" mortgages Senate Banking Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) received from Countrywide Financial, the details for which he has refused to release details despite months of promises to do so. Countrywide was once the nation's largest mortgage lender and linked to Government-Sponsored Entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

This is only half the list......READ THE REST

Congressman Hoekstra leaks secrets on Twitter

#tcot A delegation led by House Minority Leader John A. Boehner , R-Ohio, arrived in Iraq earlier today, and because of Rep. Peter Hoekstra , R-Mich., the entire world — or at least Twitter.com readers—now know they’re there.

“Just landed in Baghdad,” messaged Hoekstra, a former chairman of the Intelligence panel and now the ranking member, who is routinely entrusted to keep some of the nation’s most closely guarded secrets.

Not only did Hoekstra reveal the existence of the lawmakers’ trip, but included details about their itinerary in updates posted every few hours on his Twitter page, until he suddenly stopped, for some reason, on Friday morning.

Since it’s already a matter of public record, here are some of Hoekstra’s twitter dispatches, typos and all, delivered in just 140 characters or less:

“On the way to Andrews Air Force base.12 hour flight to mid east. Be back on Mon instead of tues. Votes mon. I’ll keep you posted,” he wrote on Feb. 4

In his last dispatch today, he wrote: “Moved into green zone by helicopter Iraqi flag now over palace. Headed to new US embassy Appears calmer less chaotic than previous here [sic].”

This may seem like a little slip of the mind, but anyone who holds a clearance just shouted "What a Moron", if he were in the military he would lose his clearance and his job...but he is a politician...so nothing will happen. Hat tip Malkin

Obama Administration supercedes Military Court , may let accused Cole Bomber go free

#tcot The Barack Obama administration has dropped all charges against the mastermind of the USS Cole bombing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon’s senior judge overseeing terror trials at Guantanamo Bay dropped charges Thursday against an al-Qaida suspect in the 2000 USS Cole bombing, upholding President Barack Obama’s order to freeze military tribunals there.

The charges against suspected al-Qaida bomber Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri marked the last active Guantanamo war crimes case.

The legal move by Susan J. Crawford, the top legal authority for military trials at Guantanamo, brings all cases into compliance with Obama’s Jan. 22 executive order to halt terrorist court proceedings at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba.

Seventeen US citizens were murdered in that bombing. HT LGF

Retired Navy Cmdr. Kirk S. Lippold, the commanding officer of the Cole when it was bombed in Yemen in October 2000, said he will be among family members of Cole and 9/11 victims who are meeting with Obama at the White House on Friday afternoon.

"I was certainly disappointed with the decision to delay the military commissions process," Lippold, now a defense adviser to Military Families United, said in an interview Thursday night. "We have already waited eight years. Justice delayed is justice denied. We must allow the military commission process to go forward."

Last year, al-Nashiri said during a Guantanamo hearing that he confessed to helping plot the Cole bombing only because he was tortured by U.S. interrogators. The CIA has admitted he was among terrorist suspects subjected to waterboarding, which simulates drowning, in 2002 and 2003 while being interrogated in secret CIA prisons.

Groups representing victims' families were angered by Obama's order, charging they had waited too long already to see the alleged attackers brought to court. GOOGLE AP

Jim Demint's common sense stimulus bill #TCOT #stimulus

If only....If only the Republicans had the power to implement this. But they don't because our former President was not conservative, he was a spender, and a big government guru. Yes he did some great things protecting us but he did not represent conservatism for the economy and when he did he was pummled by the world media. And as you know like his father, he didn't defend himself or conservatism well, if at all.

Colorado; State Sen Evie Hudak D-Arvada, introduces Anti-Charter School Amendment #TCOT #REDCO

From Colorado Charter Schools Blog

SB 90 Bad for Charter Schools

It doesn't take long for people who don't like charter schools to introduce legislation to whittle away at the key points that make charter schools successful. Newly elected state Senator Evie Hudak (D-Arvada) has introduced a bill, SB 90, to do just that. The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Debbie Benefield (D-Westminster).

When Hudak served on the State Board of Education she didn't like it that charter schools sought, and received, waiver from the School Advisory Council (accountability committee) law.......

Hudak's bill specifically targets charter schools. It undermines the authority of the charter school governing board, which should alarm all 1,000 plus charter school board members in the state. The bill even goes so far as to say that if a charter school doesn't have an accountability committee, that's grounds for revocation! Notice the proposed legislation doesn't take into account academic achievement as a means for keeping a charter school open, it simply states that not following a senseless state rule is grounds for revocation.

Rape used to recruit women as suicide bombers #TCOT

Al-Qaeda anywhere (Islamic Terrorism in general) is a viscous enemy that cannot be reasoned with, they must be eliminated. My friends who believe in diplomacy at any cost disagree with me, but let me submit into evidence this little tidbit.

The accounts, in a video released Tuesday by Iraq police, offer a rare glimpse into the networks used to find and train the women bombers who have become one of the insurgents’ most effective weapons as they struggle under increasing crackdowns.

In a prison interview with The Associated Press, with interrogators nearby, the woman said she was part of a plot in which young women were raped and then sent to her for matronly advice. She said she would try to persuade the victims to become suicide bombers as their only escape from the shame and to reclaim their honor. READ THE REST

Illegal Immigrants to get in-state tuition #REDCO #TCOT

DENVER - If passed by the state legislature, a new law would mean illegal immigrants in Colorado would be able to go to college and pay in-state tuition.

Senate Bill 170, proposed by Sen. Chris Romer (D-Denver), would let undocumented students pay the same tuition rate as resident students at public universities like the University of Colorado or Colorado State University.

To be fair, Senator Romer does qualify it a bit;

The bill stipulates that in order to qualify for in-state tuition, high school students would have to have gone to a Colorado public or private high school for three years, have graduated from a public or private Colorado high school, or get a general equivalency diploma (GED), and they would have to enroll in a Colorado higher learning institution within five years of earning their high school degree.

Another policitian who sees illegal immigrants as constituents and ignores the word "illegal". READ THE REST

Ritter's administration blows estimate on cost of oil and gas exploration by over a million dollars #REDCO #TCOT

Colorado Story of the day yesterday Hat Tip to Rocky Mountain Right,

The Associated Press broke a story yesterday that would seem to indicate that Gov. Bill Ritter's administration, in its zeal to to drive up energy costs by attacking the state's oil & gas industry, knowingly provided false budget projections to the state legislature:

Ritter's staff's estimate was $7000. Costs are coming in now at more than a million dollars.

"This is a major breach of trust," said McNulty(Rep. Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch), who said he was assured by state budget officials last year that any initial enforcement of new oil and gas regulations would not require a substantial increase in state spending.

"We have rules on how we balance the budget. I don't know how they can run a bill that hid more than a million dollars in costs," said Brophy, R-Wray.

A state official stressed that the department didn't know last year what any legislation would cost because the rules were still being developed.

On Tuesday, the House State, Veterans, & Military Affairs Committee approved a bill that would require state agencies to submit financial estimates with legislation. Rep. Jim Kerr, R-Littleton, said he and other lawmakers voted for the oil and gas bill last year without knowing the true cost.

This was either an outright lie to get a bill to pass the house or complete incompetancy, you choose. ...either way it is expensive to have incompetent liars in office.

Change We Can Believe In - Machine Poltics?

This is a change, having a president not skewered for the behavior of his friends? GREAT blog post at The Great Illuminator

HolyCoast is reporting that the NewYorkTimes is calling for Daschle to step aside!.. We will see if he obeys the holiest paper in the nation from the Left's point of view.

First it was Bill Richardson withdrawing his nomination for commerce secretary because of “pay-to-play” awarding of millions in state contracts to contributors. He didn’t do it.

Then Timothy Geithner is nominated for secretary of the treasury (who heads the IRS) and he missed paying thousands in taxes. He’s sorry.

Now Tom Daschle is nominated for Secretary of Health and Human Services, the consummate insider who earned millions in the last two years helping health industry companies grease Washington, also neglected to pay over $140,000 in taxes. He’s sorry.

UPDATE< DASHCLE WITHDRAWS NOMINATION>

And of course, let us also not forget (Obama supporter and Illinois Democrat powerhouse)Dem Governor Blago getting caught red-handed offering up Obama’s vacated Senate seat in a “pay-to-play” controversy that got him impeached. He didn’t do it.

What has been the Obama administration’s reaction to some of this?

Blago: “I was not aware of what was happening”

Geithner: “Service should not be tarnished by honest mistakes, which, upon learning of them, he quickly addressed.”

Daschle: “The White House believes nobody’s perfect.”

Richardson: “Although we must move quickly to fill the void left by Governor Richardson’s decision, I look forward to his future service to our country and in my administration.” READ THE REST AT The Great Illiminator

No Violence in Iraqi Election - Iraqi Forces take lead in security

This is awesome news. Further proof that claiming Victory in Iraq was not premature last year.

Throughout Iraq, Iraqi security forces, backed up by U.S. and coalition troops, helped ensure safety Jan. 31 as Iraqi citizens voted during provincial elections.

By the end of the day, there were no reports of anyone killed or of major violence. More than 14,400 candidates competed for 440 seats in 14 of 18 Iraqi provinces during the elections.

Results will be tallied in the coming days to see who will fill the seats in the provincial legislatures. It will then take about two months for the newly elected officials to be seated.
