Governor Christie Wrong, Wrong Wrong.

Out of honor for the dead, I did not make a fuss about this last week, but what Christie did here, and earlier for Frank Sinatra is against history, etiquette and rules followed in our country for a very long time. Let me splain, no wait there is too much, let me sum up.

"Just as an American serviceman killed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan is not deserving of a Grammy award, musicians and celebrities are not deserving of the lowering of the American flag."

Is it time to start having public service announcements on flag etiquette? I believe it is. I see this happen way to often, a local store flies its flag at half mast because someone died, they are MISSING THE POINT and BREAKING THE RULES.

"Lowering the flag to half staff should be reserved only for those who perish as a result of public duty and service, protecting our nation and the Constitution, and for those who served as formal leaders and dignitaries.

Specific information on who a governor, or the president can order a flag at half staff for- http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/faq.htm#q58

According to the Flag Code, only the President of the United States, your state's Governor, and the Mayor of the District of Columbia can order the US flag lowered to half-staff.
If everyone were to half-staff the US flag at will, the symbolic value of that honor would be lost. Another option is to display black crepe near the entrance to your building, perhaps with a photograph of the former mayor, firefighter, police officer, etc.
We recommend that you fly your town flag at half staff.
